Protecting Yourself from Negative Energy

Have you ever noticed how some people just enter a room and you can feel their energy? While some people have calming, soothing energy, others cause us to feel anxious and on edge.

If you are surrounded by negative energy that’s coming from a coworker, partner, friend, or family member, you must learn how to protect yourself without engaging. Let’s face it, sometimes there is not enough sage!

The following are some suggestions to protect yourself and preserve your sanity.

Form Healthy Boundaries.

You have the power to protect your own positive energy and mental space. Do not feel obligated to take on the emotional burden of chronically negative people. It is not your job to ‘fix’ them or turn their mood around. You can offer empathy and compassion for their situation, but you do not have to own their negativity or make it your own. One of the most powerful ways to protect yourself is to disengage from their negative energy and set clear boundaries.

Don’t Feed the Drama.

You never know what kind of day someone has had or what personal issues they’re dealing with to make them behave that way. Stay calm and detached instead of getting emotional. Don’t engage or argue. Just remain polite but distant. Remember that you cannot control them; you can only control your response.

Visualize a Protective Shield.

Visualizing a protective shield around yourself makes it easy to ward off these negative energies and vibes. Picture a bubble of white or golden light surrounding your body as you move through the world. See it as a filter that lets in positive energy but deflects negative energy.

Don’t Take Things Personally.

Choosing not to take things personally will help you feel less stressed and upset. Don’t give others power over your emotions and self-worth. Stay confident in who you are and keep your own emotional balance intact. Let hurtful acts roll off your back instead of absorbing them. This is a choice, so make the choice that strengthens and empowers you.

Your life is your responsibility! Once you come to that conclusion you can realize that you have choices and personal power to decide how others will affect you.

Removing yourself from a negative situation, whether physically or emotionally, is one of the most empowering things you can do.
